This is not the world we know. This world is controlled by computers. Men and women can be seen, but they are following orders given to them by machines. The machines were designed by mad scientists, but at some point even the mad scientists were taken over by their super-inventions.

Does this sound familiar? You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film. Why is it so popular? One of the reasons is that it reflects the fears of many people; fear of the unknown, fear of what is not understood or, at least, fear of something that is not completely understood.

The fact is that every day it seems that computers take control of another area of our lives. Some factory jobs are now done by robots(机器人)and the robots are controlled by computers. Our bank accounts are managed by computers. At the airport, our tickets are sold by a computer. Certainly many of these operations are made more efficient by computers, but our admiration is sometimes mixed with unsafe feelings. And this lack of safety is caused by the fact that we do not know how computers do these things, and we really don’t know what they might do next.

But we can find out how computers work, and once we understand them, we can use computers instead of worrying about being used by them. Today, there is a new generation of computer wizards(奇才) who know exactly how computers get things done. These young men and women, usually university students, are happy to sit for hours, sometimes for days, designing programs, not eating, not sleeping. But discovering what can be done by these wonderful slaves which they have learned to control. These computer wizards have learned to use the computer and search for new tasks for their machine.

    A. they don’t know anything about computers

    B. they haven’t really understood computers

    C. there are so many computer games

    D. computers are often down

    3. The author mentions computer wizards in order to point to that _______.

    C. only young people are interested in computers

    D. more time and energy is required to control computers

    4. Who designed all the machines?

    5. Where have you probably read about the paragraph one?

    1. D

    3. A

These young men and women仅仅是作者举得一个例子,并不是全部,D选项,文中未提及

    4. Mad scientists.

The machines were designed by mad scientists

    5. You have probably read something like it in magazines or books, or seen it in a film.

Some factory jobs are now done by robots and the robots are controlled by computers可知

Zhang Shangwu, a 27-year-old former champion gymnast turned thief and beggar, was recognized by a passerby, who took a picture of him begging and performing at a subway station in Beijing before he was soon driven away by a patrolling policeman on July 14. The passerby posted the shot online, which again drew public interest in the fallen star.

Born in Baoding, Hebei province, and admitted to the national gymnastics team when he was 12 years old, Zhang won rings gold at the 2001 Beijing Universiade at the age of 18. He also won the team title for men’s gymnastics with great athletes Xing Aowei and Yang Wei in the same event.

However, his promising gymnastics career came to a sudden standstill in 2003 when he suffered a tendon injury and failed to be selected for China's gymnastics team for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Zhang fell out with his provincial team coach and left the team after he was disqualified from the national team.

In 2007, Zhang was caught stealing athletic equipment worth 30,000 yuan from Beijing Xiannongtan Sports School. He also confessed he had committed about 10 similar thefts because of financial problems. Zhang was then sentenced four years in prison in 2007. On April 12 this year, Zhang was released after serving his sentence.

He said he had no choice -- no one helped him and the school didn't provide him with basic living allowances. Zhang received approval to retire from the Hebei Administration of Sports in 2003 and was compensated about 60,000 yuan. There has been heavy criticism in the media about how little help Zhang received from the national sports system since a tendon injury in 2003 ended his career.
